What is the best Windows virus, spyware removal program? Norton or McAfee? Or something else?

I have "Spy Guard 2008" on my computer (I do believe it’s malicious spyware stuff) and I need to get rid of it and it’s components. I want to BUY a top notch virus cleaner/protector for WINDOWS XP. I haven’t had a paid subscription to virus protection for a couple years now. I need something spectacular that will clean my computer and protect me.

Should I buy Norton or McAfee? Which versions? Or is there something else out there that would fit my situation? Please be honest, and I appreciate your help!
PS-
I think the one I have installed on my computer is McAfee, but it hasn’t been renewed since I first bought my computer.
Any sites that have to do with virus protection WON’T LOAD! It keeps saying "page error"….what does this mean?!?!
Tried installing the search and destroy spyware…got this message:

"error sending request.
a connection with the server could not be established."

I have a new computer running vista and my pre-installed security software is about to expire. What is the best software to use in the – range? My computer is currently running trial version of Norton 260.
Thanks….i’ll look at Avast first since it was the most recommended.

Who cares if Norton or whoever the heck makes anti-virus software loses money, we shouldn’t have to buy their product to be protected online. Plus, the anti-virus companies have a vested interest in keeping viruses out there, because, if viruses ever ceased, there goes their business model. Who knows, they could be responsible for some of the viruses that are plaguing our computers.

Norton Antivirus?

Hi, I have Norton Antivirus installed on my laptop (Centrino duo and 2Gb RAM) and I noticed that when i installed it my laptop got really slow, takes ages to do anything. Is the Norton what is causing this? Should I get rid of it and get another antivirus? Which one?

There is a trojan virus on my computer that prevents the desktop from opening. On my computer when it is turned on it seems normal until I am logged on and all i see is a purely black background and a program that appears as either "Privacy tools" or "Privacy componants" and it appears to be a virus scanner that tells me there are like 200 problems with my computer. Is there a way that I can get my desktop and start menu back? I even got Norton to run somehow but it said the virus required manual removal, which I cant do without running any programs. I can’t get Norton to run again either.

I update Norton and Adaware a couple times a week, so removal isn’t a problem. But how do I prevent future infections? Is there any way to prevent these malicious cookies?

I have a major problem with my PC right now. I can not for the life of me get rid of spyware on my PC. I have Norton, I have run Registry Mechanic and Adware removal and still cant seem to rid my PC of it. Also a lot of time at start up Norton notifies me that it defected and deleted a virus.
