Actually, there’s no harm in installing more than one antimalware application to be used as a secondary scanner – doing so can be advantageous. However, be sure not to allow more than one primary application to autostart, in order to prevent potential conflicts.
Microsoft installs it’s own malicious software removal tool with Windows Updates. To run it just click Start> Run then type mrt.exe into the dialog box then click OK.
If you don’t have a real time malware scanner installed Spyware Terminator is pretty good. It’s a little aggressive and as with vitually all such programs there is the occasional false positive detection. I prefer something that is too thorough rather than missing things.
If you already have real time protection you can add as many other scan on demand malware removers as you like. It’s best not to rely on a single program anyway.
Malwarebytes free version is good. Currently detects and removes over 200,000 types of infection.
Spybot Search & Destroy (set to scan on demand only) will detect and remove over 1.2 million (yes, that many) types of infection.
SuperAntiSpyware – there’s a portable version that can be run from a USB key too.
Also check out these free online scanners/ removers. They can be run from your browser.
