Try a online antivirus scanner and a online anti-adware/malware/spyware scanner in safe mode with network to clean up your computer BEFORE you download anything. This because the program you download can get infected.
Disable "System Restore" for Windows Me and XP, then restart your PC to clean your system restore points for viruses, spyware, adware etc.
Now restart in safe mode.
To get in safe mode Press "F8" upon bootup.
Select "Safe mode with Networking".
Go to Start – Run – type iexplore http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html Enter(ok).
Do a full system scan. If something is found, delete it, reboot and do the same again in safe mode with network.
When that scan does not find anything you reboot again in safe mode with network.
Go to Start – Run – type iexplore http://www.ewido.net/en/ Enter(ok).
Do a full system scan. If something is found, delete it, reboot and do the same again in safe mode with network.
**NOTE: Do NOT do anything else with your computer when scanning. This because you can start virus/adware/spyware/malware manually.
When no one of these scanners are showing anything you can reboot back to normal mode.
Turn on "System Restore".

You need to get one antivirus program, one firewall and some spyware/adware/malware removers if you don’t have it.
I use Norton Internet Security (antivirus, spyware, firewall, add blocker, mail spamfilter, pop up blocker etc) Ad Aware, Spybot and more on my desktop running XP Home SP2 with Firefox and Yahoo Toolbar with pop up blocker.
On my laptop i have Ubuntu 7.04. No security needed in Linux, but i use antivirus and firewall. Firefox is standard.
I have no virus, spyware, adware, pop ups etc on my computers.
Mozilla Firefox and Opera are safer browsers to use then Internet Explorer.

AVG Anti-spyware Free.
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/20/lng/us/tp...
Spybot – Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven’t intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don’t see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free, so there’s no harm giving it a try to see if something has invaded your computer.

AVG Anti-Rootkit is a powerful tool with state-of-the-art technology for detection and removal of rootkits. rootkits are used to hide the presence of a malicious object like Trojans or keyloggers on your computer. If a threat uses rootkit technology to hide itself it is very hard to find the malware on your PC. CCleaner is a freeware system optimization and privacy tool. It removes unused files from your system – allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space. McAfee!
The best free software is probably AVG Free Anti virus. For paying, I would have to say trend micro.
Norton sucks. The best one I’ve found is Avast. It’s free to download. AVG is ok but I find it annoying – too many "download update" prompts. Maybe I just haven’t customized the settings to update automatically.
i used to use avg, but after that crapped out on me i just got rid of it. ive heard that avast is good and free. i actually use mcafee and obviously you have to pay, but its very good
The free AVG program is great. I’m sure the one you pay for would be better.
I switched from Norton Anti virus to AVG. Even though I always got Norton free after rebates, it slowed my machine down alot. I now use AVG free to download, and love it. I never know that its working. It is so smooth.
i dont know bout the best free but if your willing ot pay the best software for whole computer coverage that comes with everything like storage, antivirus, antispyware, etc i highly recommend " NORTON 360" not any other nortoin just "NORTON 360" but i do know of a free anti virus called "AVG" but as to its affectivness i dont no srry hope i waz of some help
Try Trend Micro’s House call. http://www.trendmicro.com for free AV. If you want to pay for good AV software, McAffee Total Protection is the way to go.
I have Norton on my comp. but it came with it. but its really expensive. but works good no virses.

I’ve had terrible luck and tried almost everything. Here are my findings:
Free : http://free.grisoft.com
I got this one from a friend at Best Buy and it was absolutely fantastic.
For a Price: http://www.pandasecurity.com/homeusers/solutions/internet-security/
I use this one, they offer a lot of mail-in rebates if you buy the product in a store. It is much better than the widely publicized ones like Norton and McAffee because there are less hackers that know about it. You can get it almost anywhere. They also offer a free version.
My computer is virus free for the first time in a long time! Hope this helps you.
thumbs up:..AVG…Thumbs down: Norton
I think the best and free antivirus, Blocks Popups, Removes Spyware, Adware & much more the name of this antivirus is STOPzilla you can download this antivirus from.
http://www.STOPzilla.com
I’ve had most of them. There is no such thing as a good free software.
You trade off, with attachments swarming in your computer and slowing you down. Like just before I came to this question, a pop up activating. I have AVG. But it’s free, right. The trackers are just like having a stupid virus….clogs you up and slows you down.
I have Comcast cable and McAfee came free with the service, but when I wanted support, I was reminded by the out sourcing guy "Rick" that it was FREE!
They told me that if I have a virus that it was before I had McAfee?
And that it was free and couldn’t help me.
I removed the FREE crap from my computer.
Norton sucked for me, I had a little man dancing across my screen before my computer crashed.
I’ve heard of Avast, I haven’t been there yet.
Spybot, Super Antivirus, Adware 2008, been there done that.
I typed into Yahoo ask a question about a week ago and someone said
that they use a cross of Adware 2008 and Avg.
I was told by Microsoft that all virus programs, will not be able to
find and cover all viruses. That you need to alternate. But the issue with that is, they cancel out one another sometimes. Meaning, they think the other is a virus and hinders the other
from operating properly.
So uninstall them, then put them back in right away. Don’t go onto the internet unprotected ever.
AVG 8.0 Free is very good in detecting and removing viruses and malwares. but it uses too much ram around 50+mb only on its resident shield. Fast Update
Avast 4.8 home edition (Free) is also a great anti virus plus anti spyware, uses small ram and little resources, but no scheduler for scan. but its very good in detecting infections. Fast update
Avira Free Personal is also good but lacks in email scanner and anti spyware which we need in everyday transactions, also hard to update this program, maybe its free thats why.
Pc Tools 4.0 Free is a fast anti virus, with small footprints in our resources and rams (around 4-10mb intelli guard) but lacks in anti spyware capabilities. detection rate is also good. hard to configure auto update.
Selecting an AV for your pc is easy u just need to know the system requirements of each anti virus sofware.
i’ve tried this four anti virus on my pc, it all work fine. but i need to select only one,
Avira is great when it comes to detection rates, but it annoys me everytime it find a virus it pop-ups can’t configure to auto remove infections or put it in a virus vault. So poor when it comes to updates. No email protection and anti spyware. But very good in detecting and removing threats in real time
Pc Tools is fast and easy (aside for the auto update) but i dont think im secure when using pc tools. just a feeling. this anti virus is very light on resources you wouldn’t feel that its their protecting you.
AVG 8.0 is the best among the four anti virus but i cant stand to use it, because it slows my pc to a halt sometimes, its taking too much ram just for its resident shield (50+mb) but i will recommend this if your using a dual core processor or higher plus 1gig or ram or higher. as for me im only using 768mb of ram in AMD 1.5 ghz single core. so i choose
AVAST 4.8 HOME EDITION, light in resources, complete protection for virus, spyware and rootkits. fast updates, email protection but lacks in scheduling scans. but it work fine for me. because i need an anti virus that protects me and will not slow my pc.
